Both the champion and reserve champion steers in the Beef Empire Days Live Show, held June 4, were fed at Lane County Feeders near Dighton by Foote Cattle Co. of Bucyrus. The champion steer weighed 1,544 lbs., with reserve weighing 1,568 lbs.
The champion live heifer was a 1,500 lb. entry fed at Sunbelt Feed Yard of Hugoton by David Dodd Cattle Co. of Indiahoma, OK. Sunbelt Feed Yard also fed the reserve champion live heifer, which weighed 1,568 lbs. and was owned by Mid America Cattle Co. of Hugoton.
Director of the University of Nebraska West Central Research & Extension Center Kelly Bruns judged the live show, which was sponsored by Merck Animal Health. Bruns grew up on a diversified livestock and farming operation near Grand Island, NE. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska and his doctorate from South Dakota State University (SDSU). Bruns was a professor of animal science at SDSU for 18 years prior to accepting his current position.
When the live show was completed, cattle were transported to Tyson Fresh Meats at Holcomb for the carcass competition. This week’s KLA newsletter will have the Earl Brookover Award winner and champions from the carcass show.
