Champions Named At KJLS

The 92nd annual Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) was held in Hutchinson September 27-29. Grand champions were named in both market and breeding divisions across all four species throughout the weekend.

Pyper Ferris from Dickinson County led her 1,425 lb. crossbred steer to grand champion honors, while Ty Wood of Leavenworth County owned the reserve champion steer, a crossbred weighing 1,489 lb.

In the breeding heifer show, a commercial heifer exhibited by Cheyenne Brunker of Johnson County took top honors. Reserve supreme went to the Mainetainer heifer shown by Harper Conine, Scott County.

New this year, a bred-and-owned division was added to the breeding heifer show. Dakota Smith-Allen of Johnson County earned grand champion bred-and-owned heifer with her home-bred Angus. Josie Beltz from McPherson County was named reserve champion with her bred-and-owned Hereford heifer.

A 249 lb. dark crossbred shown by Lincoln Martin from Ford County was named grand champion market hog. Tucker Goss of Ellsworth County drove his 287 lb. dark crossbred to reserve overall grand champion.

The supreme breeding gilt came out of the commercial division, exhibited by Kyser Nemecek of Allen County. Reserve supreme breeding gilt went to an entry from Ryan Mongeau, Rooks County, also out of the commercial division.

Ty Jones of Wabaunsee County owned the grand champion market lamb, a 151 lb. blackface. The reserve champion, a 127 lb. blackface lamb, was shown by Brecken Nelson from Greeley County.

Supreme registered ewe honors went to a lamb in the all-other-breeds division that also was owned by Nelson. Emery Yoho from Woodson County exhibited the reserve supreme registered ewe out of the Dorset division.

The grand champion commercial breeding ewe was shown by Esmeralda Franklin of Linn County, with the reserve champion being exhibited by Savanna Junek from Ottawa County.

Cheyenne Brunker showed the grand champion market goat weighing 87 lbs. The 96 lb. reserve champion was led by Kodi McComb, Pratt County.

McComb also led the grand champion commercial doe, with Shelby Sprague of Allen County owning the reserve supreme.
